Have you ever looked into your relationship between you and your friends?
Have you ever fought with them? Have you ever cried with them?
Have you ever forgiven them easily?
How come you and she/he are still friends till now?
And has it ever crossed your mind that this is because that’s what friendship is all about?

Everybody has a different relation or what I’d rather refer to here as ‘a friendship’ between them and each person they interact with. For example the friendships between you and your best friend, your family, your neighbour or even your acquaintances or people you’ve just met but feel comfortable to share certain things with.

In this issue I would like to share with you, the term friendship and how to make friends in Chinese.

Friendship 朋友 péng yǒu

When you’d like to introduce your friend to others you could say
zhè wèi shì wǒ de péng yǒu
這位是我的朋友 (traditional Chinese writing)
这位是我的朋友 (simplified Chinese writing)
And if you’d like to say she/he is your (my) girlfriend/boyfriend you could say
tā shì wǒ de / nán péng yǒu
/* 是我的 / 朋友  (both traditional Chinese writing &simplified Chinese writing are the same in this sentence)
Or if you’d like to deny that she/he is not your friend you could say
tā bù shì wǒ de péng yǒu
/*不是我的朋友  (can write as both)

Now we have learned 13 words in this issue;

   she

  he, him / the third person
 不  (negative prefix); not; no
 是 shì verb to be; is, am, are / yes
 我    I, me
 我的  de my, mine
   female, woman
  nán male, man
 朋友 péng yǒu  friend
 這 zhè this, these (sometimes used before a measure word, especially in Beijing)
 位 wèi position, location, (measure word for persons), place, seat
 這位 / 这位 zhè wèi this person

Hope you’d enjoy practicing!
