During the weekends, I spent some of my times tidying up and re-exploring the piles of CDs in my house until I found one hidden masterpiece of the Thai music industry. The CD with a sepia tone album cover on the shelf had the title written “Ban-Tuk-Kong-Dok-Mai-Lek” (A Metal Flower’s Diary). “Dok-Mai-Lek (Metal Flower)” is surely an alias of Thai diva “Amp Saowaluck Leelabutra”. Even though her popularity has declined significantly over the past fifteen years, her solo debut album has proved her “the real artist” of Thailand music industry to these days. Four years after her final project with the Thai legendary girl band, Sao-Sao-Sao (Triple Girls) in 1989, Amp’s first solo album was officially released in January 1993 under the production of “Grammy Entertainment”. The producer of this album is “Chumpol Supanyo”. It is undeniable that this album is Amp’s most successful work of all time according to both the feedback from public interest and from the high sales. She ended up awarded the “Season Award : The Most Popular Female Vocalist 1993”. Later in that year, she also performed on stage in the concert “The Opening of the Metal Flower’s Diary” at MBK Hall Bangkok, which was considered the greatest performing stage at that time. Although the sound used is rather old-fashioned like that back in the late 80s and seems not so interesting, the well-arranged pop-rock music and especially the singer’s voice made every song sound smoothly and consistently. The lyrics are very well written with wise and deep meaning. There are ten songs in this album, four of which written by Amp herself; they are “Kod-Dun (Pressure)”, “Doo-Eng (Watch It Yourself)” “Pro-Mai-Kao-Jai (For Our Differences)” and “Muang-Rang (Deserted Town)”. The most recommended song would be “Kod-Dun” (Pressure) ,the heartbreaking debut single which introduced the album to the public successfully. It is still believed to today that her passed relationship with a famous actor was mentioned in this song although she claimed that it was written solely on an artistic muse. “Kae-Sia-Jai-Mai-Por (Regret Is Not Enough)” written by “Dee-Nithipong Hornak” under the pseudonym “Amphon Panderm”. This love ballad works just like a poem. The music doesn’t sound as extremely heartbreaking as “Kod-Dun”, but slightly blue. “Ni-Yai (Novel)”, the lyrics tell the story about one’s life which concerns not only about love matter but also sincerity among people and their dreams. The saxophone sound which usually appeared in 80s’ballads goes with the song very well and made the song even catchier. “Pro-Mai-Kao-Jai (For Our Differences)”, not many songs at that time shared the honest truth about love like this one did. Moreover, there are also some interesting up-tempo beat singles such as “Krai-Na-Pood-Jung (Who Said So?)” and “Oo-Tid-Hai (Dedicate To You) In Thailand’s mainstream music industry it is rare for a singer to appear with more of a musician image, Amp is one of them who always create the work with full competence and talent. I would say “Ban-Tuk-Kong-Dok-Mai-Lek” is a good start for those who’d like to find out how exceptional this lady is. Then you will learn better of “Amp Saowaluck Leelabutra” who gave such reflection and impression of the 90’s. |
