Saeiw(1), buddy, friend and a true friend, what are their interactions like?  I have recently learned of friendship between two men in parallel lines which no pair of friends could be like. The parallel lines grew together, tending each other only in a certain distance for they took the paths that could never meet.

My definition of a friend is someone you can lean on when you are down. What is a friend in your term?

The Thai society usually defines friendship in similarity and that people with differences do not share the same path. I wonder if it is right that we are ever supposed walk on the same road. And would we be lying to ourselves, accepting that friendship begins out of affinity alone? Because each and everyone of us were born differently and God wouldn’t be pleased with a one copy of hu-wo-man kind.

Narcissus was a young man of God’s who devoted his life to the religion, believing he was meant to be a path leader. And so he chose the path to search for the meaning of life since he was gifted in reading others’ lives and fortune.

Goldmund was a young boy from a family of complexity between his parents. His father tried every way to keep him from living his mother’s way. He was sent to a church, growing towards the path of decency. Gifted with his senses, his destination was altered once he’d met a friend who led him to his true self.

The gravity between these two characters started when the boy lay his respect to the young man who was prepare to be a teacher. Narcissus a thin, soft dark skinned, veteran looking elegant Greek with peaceful eyes of a thinker that seemed to see trough everything, he was charming, but threatening at the same time. Goldmund, a polite and friendly young boy who could easily impress others since the first meeting, believes that he should spend his life in the church as the path of merit. They both have a gift and crisp sign of ability, make them differ from the other. Contrast but have some common that link up them and conduce a word conversation later.

While Narcissus choose to enter self practice for ordain, Goldmund start to walk on the road go by sense.

Relationship between contradictions; a living good way, trough theory and austere self discipline and one who learn by sense, commingle with real life. But be an Inspiration, understand and also accept a way that friend step down by specific own force, each other.

Place for lay down to brim will power in the way of life that must be learned. In condition that social press and line up to show a differ between merit-evil, good-bad, sublimity- depravity seem like the world was lined up and only some line that lead the way to kingdom of heaven. What is a way we walk? People seem like know their own goal way, most of time. on cloud nine in their own way. Even though story set up in a medieval, Germany, but life and question of man look like nothing change. It’s only platitude which still over and over again.

What we ask for?, from a relationship in money society,  that build a stranger and scream scare for self defense. Friendships become goods in Convenience Store, approach just for money robs. At the time we can connect quickly than eyes move, affinity is not follow.

Diversity even in opinion force man to kill, can’t share a fate. In this full of different world but we was told repeatedly that you should be familiar, for tranquility, for peach and for…, for all of you will be together as friend which you aren’t need to learn a difference any more.

Although a book is focus on each man accession of something but a belonging is a life nourished. Apprehension and acceptance are like a ground base of inter-inspiration space. Some day we will be learning to talk and cohabit on understanding and diversity acceptance too.

Sodsai was interviewed. She talk about Hesse’s works that his work is a self analysis through characters, extremely difference, all are him. May some feel strange with a word spell that man must be learning to be friendly with self. It’s reflecting a meaning; man can’t love other if he/she can’t love him/herself. Or man travel for searching a peach inside.

Hesse, Hermann: the writer of the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature, born with former missionary parents and ideologist grandfather, Germany, widely known in Thailand through the translation work of Seemon and Sodsai (Sodsai Khanthiworapong). Hesse was also famous as a peace who extremely objected war. He destroyed his family’s hope by escaping form church in his early life before turning to work as a professional writer. He was interested in psychoanalysis theory of Carl G. Jung and Sigmund Freud as they regularly reflected in his work. He was once treated by Jung’s methods. At certain point he became interested in the Eastern philosophy, so much as his interpretation of Buddhism rose up into a master-piece called Siddhartha. A tome which was his last novel, The Glass Bread Game, won him the Nobel Prize. He was regarded as a Western who reflected a unity between the land of sunrise and the land of sunset.

Dhevsiri Suksopa said “like Hesse try to say that even you live either in a good or bad way, we all can learn from experiments”.

For a great friendship with both self and other, what is patch we will choose?  Sadness and welcome when world offer many choices. Identity which we are searching for it’s not just a battlefield of consumption as social cast up.

(1) North Eastern region native language, meaning true closed friends.
